Achim Melzer

Achim Melzer was born in Stuttgart. He graduated in 1989 from the Karlsruhe Music University of Music, having studied under Prof. Martin Ostertag, after which a two-year scholarship from Germany’s Academic Exchange Service enabled him to study under Prof. Timothy Eddy in New York. Advanced classes with Prof. János Starker, Prof. Heinrich Schiff, Daniil Schafran, Prof. Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartet) and Yo-Yo Ma completed his training.

The years 1991 to 1993 saw him back in Karlsruhe, where he obtained his artist’s diploma with the distinction ’Very Good’. In September 1995, he won first prize at the Second International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach (Austria). Achim Melzer has been a member of the Bamberg Symphony since 1993. In 2011 he co-founded the Bamberg Quinten (‘Fifths’) Quartet.
