Ilian Garnetz was born in St. Petersburg, grew up in Chişinău (Moldova), and started playing the violin at the age of five. After studying in Helsinki and Moscow, he completed his training with Prof. Igor Oistrakh in Brussels. He won a plethora of awards, including third prize in the International David Oistrakh Competition in Moscow as well as first prize in the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition, both in 2008. The following year he was awarded third prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
Guest appearances have taken Ilian Garnetz to numerous European countries, the Near East, Far East and USA. His musical partners have included Simone Young, Jaap van Zweden, Christian Zacharias, Paul Goodwin, Cristian Mandeal, Vakhtang Matchavariani and Pinchas Zukerman.
Ilian Garnetz is also an avid chamber musician: he has performed with the Prague Piano Trio in countries such as Spain and the Czech Republic, and with the Paian Trio he has made recordings for Germany’s SWR radio. In 2010 his CD with pianist Alina Bercu was awarded a ‘Clef du mois ResMusica’ in France and a ‘Golden Label’ in Belgium. Ilian Garnetz has been First Concertmaster of the Bamberg Symphony since 2016.
