Markus Mayers

Markus Mayers is from Kempten. After graduating from secondary school, he studied cello with Mario Blaumer in Saarbrücken and Prof. Wolfgang Boettcher in Berlin, as well as chamber music with members of the Amadeus and Alban Berg Quartets. He took advanced classes with Prof. Boris Pergamenschikow, Prof. Frans Helmerson, Prof. Heinrich Schiff, among others.

As a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, he went on concert tours under such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink and Zubin Mehta. In 1993, as cellist of the Henschel Quartet, he won first prize in the Charles Hennen Competition, as well as the Bavarian State Prize for young artists.

Markus Mayers also played chamber music with Wolfgang Meyer, Norbert Brainin, Martin Lovett, Isabelle van Keulen, Karl-Heinz Steffens and Rainer Kussmaul, among others. He performed as a soloist with the Rhineland Palatinate State Philharmonic, City of Trier Philharmonic and numerous chamber orchestras. For the last few years he has also immersed himself deeply in historical performance practice on original instruments. He is a founding member of fattoamano – the Bamberg Symphony’s baroque soloists’ ensemble. Markus Mayer has been a member of our orchestra since 1994.
