Matthias Ranft studied first under Prof. Arthur Troester in Hamburg and Prof. Christoph Henkel in Freiburg im Breisgau, after which a German Academic Exchange Service scholarship took him to Prof. János Starker in the USA. Before taking his soloist’s exam, he gained his first orchestral experience as solo cello in the Hof Symphony Orchestra from 1981 to 1983. In 1984 he won the Berlin Mendelssohn Competition.
Matthias Ranft is a regular guest artist at international festivals such as Japan’s Affinis Festival. His concert work includes both chamber music, for instance as a member of the Franconia Trio alongside Jörg Widmann and Frank Peter Zimmermann, and solo appearances, under Gilbert Varga, Sir Roger Norrington, Adam Fischer, Lawrence Renes and Jonathan Nott. He has drawn on his musical experiences as a tutor at the Freiburg im Breisgau University of Music (2001-2004), at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and at international advanced classes in Japan. He has played with the Bamberg Symphony since 1985, and has been solo cello since 1991.
