Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, William Tuttle began playing the horn at the age of eleven. Wayne Fraederich and Barry Benjamin were important teachers in his early years. In 1979 he won the Milwaukee Symphony Soloists’ Competition, and was solo horn in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

From 1979 he studied at Northwestern University with Prof. Dale Clevenger, long-serving solo horn of the Chicago Symphony. In 1981, after passing an audition with Claudio Abbado, Bill Tuttle was engaged as horn player in the Orchestra of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. During this time he played under conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Carlos Kleiber, Lorin Maazel and Claudio Abbado.

He moved to the Bamberg Symphony in 1982. From 1983 to 1984 he worked at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Duisburg and then returned to the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Bill Tuttle is a member of the Bamberg Symphony Brass Quintet.
