Chamber Concert: string quartet and percussion

Bamberg, Konzerthalle, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal
20:00 Uhr

It’s our last chamber music »jam session« of the season: look forward to a programme featuring an unusual combination of instruments and an enchanting world of sound and rhythm. Four string players and two percussionists from our orchestra will perform a concert showcasing some fascinating pieces. This includes a brand-new piece by Gabriele Campagna – a fellow violinist from our orchestra who composes »on the side« and whose string quartet we premiered last season. We can’t wait to see which parts of the percussion arsenal he'll show us. The work by composer Andy Pape, who comes from the USA and now lives in Denmark, is a genuine acoustic choreography – the title is a playful combination of the words »cadence« and »dance«. He wrote it in 1989 and it is particularly appealing for its rhythmic intricacies and tonal exuberance. Philip Glass’ impressive Third String Quartet also offers lots of artistic skill and imagination – and, of course, that unmistakable hypnotic pull that often characterises his scores. The poetic music was originally composed in 1985 as part of a film about the life of the Japanese writer and revolutionary Mishima and uses intense musical imagery to explore some of his childhood memories. The piece »lucite dreams« from 2022, composed by the American Max Vinetz, is also a joy to hear: it playfully revolves around various pieces of furniture and their materials, including IKEA’s transparent »Tobias« chair – and the musicians are able to demonstrate the vast range of possibilities on their instruments.
