A concert in two halves with an interval – and things will get very sporty on an intriguing playing field with loads of musical passes: under Elim Chan's baton, we'll form an orchestral team for compositions that demand team spirit and coordination. But first, we prepare for the match in musical terms with a work by Sofia Gubaidulina, written »with great pleasure«. Composed in 1971, it is a wonderful story about a small piece of chalk. For Dvořák’s violin concerto, premiered in 1883, we welcome the celebrated violinist Augustin Hadelich as the charging centre forward: Because although the original composition is based on the idea of a symphonic concerto, there is plenty of room for the soloist to express himself – especially in the fiery finale, based on the Bohemian folk dance »Furiant«, which translates as »the enthusiastic« or »the frenzied«. In the second half, it is then up to us to bounce the musical ball back and forth between the different sections with great precision and unerring accuracy – in Bartók’s popular Concerto for Orchestra from 1943, which is actually a symphony in disguise, but offers a wealth of solo opportunities for individual members of our orchestra. There is a regular exchange of strokes, for example in the highly entertaining second movement, entitled »Giuoco delle coppie« (»Game of Couples«) in many printed editions of the work. The composer even has extra breathing breaks for us, such as the inserted elegy – but afterwards, the delightful colourful sounds develop energetically again and conclude with a resounding success.
