New Musical Paths

Among composers of the time, there was great uncertainty: what more could one possibly contribute to the symphonic genre after Beethoven’s Ninth? Brahms, a notorious self-doubter, struggled deeply with this question. “I shall never compose a symphony! You have no idea what it feels like when one always hears such a giant marching behind,” he once wrote. How fortunate, then, that Brahms ultimately did gift the musical world with four magnificent symphonies. We are delighted to present these masterpieces to our audience in an exclusive Brahms cycle spanning more than two years. The journey begins with the First Symphony – a dense, intricately woven work whose earliest sketches eventually led to the composition of the First Piano Concerto, which will also be performed this evening.
