Insights into moving family and life stories: Clara and Robert Schumann are regarded as the most famous musical couple of the 19th century – and here we combine their two piano concertos. At just 14 years of age, Clara began her work under her maiden name, Wieck, assisted by Robert Schumann with the orchestration. In 1835, the concerto was premiered in Leipzig with Clara as soloist. Five years later, after a prolonged dispute with her father, the two lovers were finally free to be married, and in 1845 Clara Schumann also sat at the piano when Robert's concerto was performed for the first time in Dresden. Both pieces share the »passionate« key of A minor and are kindred spirits in many regards, yet also fascinatingly different. The younger sister of our guest conductor will be performing as the soloist. The concert starts with a piece by Raminta Šerkšnytė from the Lithuanian homeland of both sisters; she is one of the Baltic state’s best-known contemporary composers: her »Midsummer Song« from 2009 has been described by one critic as captivating with its »kaleidoscopic spectrum of the finest sounds«. To conclude, we present a just as vibrant piece by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis: like Schumann, this late Romantic composer suffered from mental health issues towards the end of his life and died at the age of 35. He was influenced by his studies in Leipzig and Warsaw – and, upon his return to Lithuania in 1907, completed his tone poem »Jūra«, which he himself described as a »symphony of surging waves« – a work that captures a seascape in moving sound imagery.
