On Tour: Brünn

Following our great success at the 2024 Janáček Festival, we are setting off for Brno once more – this time for a one-week residency in the birthplace of Jakub Hrůša. Alongside a symphonic concert, the programme also features two opera performances in the orchestra pit. Brno, inseparably linked to the life and work of Leoš Janáček, thus becomes a musical centre once again. In the staged production of Janáček’s »Jenůfa«, our orchestra changes its perspective and takes its place in the pit. The opera »Jenůfa« is one of Janáček’s most significant compositions and has a permanent place in the Brno Opera’s repertoire. Martin Glaser’s production premiered in 2015, featuring the ensemble of the Janáček Opera at the National Theatre Brno. The symphony concert opens with two thematic works from Bohemia and Moravia: Janáček’s concert overture from 1895, based on the folk tune »The Jealous Man«, is about jealousy, violence and despair – its musical idiom is accordingly turbulent. Dvořák’s tone poem »The Wood Pigeon« takes up an old Bohemian legend: A woman murders her husband, but is haunted by the mournful cry of the dove – the call of her conscience – until finally she takes her own life. Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony, in the version from 1878/1880, is also characterised by movement, which the composer himself specified in programmatic notes and tempo markings: »Moved, not too fast« is the instruction at the beginning, where the call of the horn, the rustling of the forest and birdsong conjure up a natural world. »Moved« also appears in the instructions for the scherzo with its striking hunting scenes and characteristic barrel organ imitation. And the finale is marked »Moved, yet not too fast«.
