»Playing with building blocks« – that is how Mahler once described his creative output. In this concert, conducted by Philippe Jordan, we will follow his example, bringing together over 100 instruments full of enthusiasm to add one note after another. Uniting our orchestral forces, we will strive to follow Mahler’s aim of »building a world with all means possible«. The soundscape we are creating is his popular Fifth Symphony from 1902, in whose interpretation we have the opportunity to indulge our love of music, for the composer said that »the boldest passages and movements« had »escaped« him here. It is a multifaceted work with lots of playful building blocks, and the Adagietto, a dreamlike haven of peace, is a truly ethereal movement – famous in particular from Visconti’s classic film »Death in Venice«. A rousing trance then brings this earth-shattering stroke of genius to a close, in which one reviewer discovered »an overwhelming abundance of beauty« after the first performance. Our programme also features the »delightfully individual« artistry of the acclaimed young violinist María Dueñas – with one of the most famous and popular concertos in the violin repertoire. Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed his violin concerto, premiered in 1845, during a summer holiday in Bad Soden in the Taunus mountains, while in an extremely happy mood. And you can hear that in this virtuoso piece with its magical melodies and sparkling action – about which a contemporary remarked that even »the angels in heaven rejoice« at its beguiling charm, elf-like lightness and musical wit.
