Sol Gabetta plays Martinů

Abo C
Bamberg, Konzerthalle, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal
20:00 Uhr

She sets her audiences’ souls vibrating: Sol Gabetta, Argentina’s outstanding cellist! Few can resist the passion-driven power and intensity of her playing. She plays Martinů’s popular Cello Concerto for us, in which the composer brilliantly marries the folk music of his homeland with a 20th-century musical idiom. Its virtuoso solo part bristles with constant rhythmic dislocations, yet radiates feelings of great beauty. Alongside it we’ll hear Ligeti’s »Lontano« – a sonically intense work premiered exactly 50 years ago, and structured by »harmonic crystallisation«. Its subtle susurrations have won it a permanent place not only in the concert hall but also in the soundtracks of several Hollywood blockbusters, such as Stanley Kubrick’s »The Shining« – sensuous music perfect for ratcheting up a scene’s tension to an unbearable pitch. And to close, the culmination of Schubert’s symphonic oeuvre: the »Great C major« Symphony. When Schumann first heard this epically scaled work, he felt transported to an »utterly new world« and enthused: »All these instruments, they’re human voices – these heavenly lengths, they’re like a four-volume novel.« A truly passion-packed concert!
