The Creation

Abo A
Bamberg, Konzerthalle, Joseph-Keilberth-Saal

"And there was light!" This season’s programme naturally has to include the most famous musical setting of the biblical creation story: Haydn's magnificent 1798 oratorio. Haydn had grown up singing as a choirboy, immersed in the church music tradition of his day. Later, he once said about his creative process: "When I can’t make proper progress composing, I walk up and down the room, rosary in hand, pray a few Hail Marys, and then the ideas return." On one of his two trips to England, he was offered a libretto that Handel supposedly had shown no interest in: a textbook based on the Book of Genesis and narrated in the style of John Milton's religious verse epic "Paradise Lost”. Once back in Vienna, Haydn had it translated into German by Baron van Swieten. The premiere was a resounding success. Piece by piece, this musical picture book gives an account of the world’s creation over several days – from the initial chaos to the creation of heaven and earth and the creation of man. The sacred music genre proved no obstacle to Haydn's humour, for his effective musical rendering of the creation story is full of wit, including expressive depictions of all kinds of creatures – from crawling worms to the host of insects to cooing doves, enormous whales, and a roaring lion. Together with a top-class ensemble of soloists and the Dresden Chamber Choir, our orchestra will provide a thrilling concert experience! Our conductor, Giovanni Antonini, is an oratorio specialist who is convinced that "Haydn had a kind of intuitive grasp of the origin of the universe long before science gave us its account."
